A marine absorbent does the same job as other absorbents – it either creates a barrier to stop spills from spreading and/or absorbs the spilled liquid. The difference is that marine absorbents are designed for use on water – such as lakes, ponds, reservoirs and even in harbours. Because water absorbent booms float at the surface even when saturated, it’s easy to retrieve them after use. You can also link booms together to achieve the length and shape you need – simply use the strong zinc-plated carbon steel attachment clips and rings.
Some marine absorbent socks and booms are made to absorb only oils and oil-based liquids (including lubricants and fuels). They won’t absorb any water, which means all the absorbency is saved for the liquid you need to prevent from spreading. These oil-only containment booms are especially effective because they will float even when saturated. We also supply water absorbent booms that will not absorb the liquid, but contain it and stop it from spreading.
Yes – some marine absorbents can also be used on land. For example, our oil-only booms will also hug the ground to prevent oils and fuels from spreading.
